Leather Camera Cases from IDSworks

Your Camera Deserves More Than Just a Case — It Deserves a Perfect Companion.

IDSworks Half‑Cover Camera Case. Redefining what “feel” means for every Leica, Hasselblad, and other premium cameras.

We’ve been waiting for this moment since the very first day IDSworks was founded.

Not striving for “how soon we can do it” but for “when can we do it right”. Since June 2004, the design concept for our half‑cover case was already sitting on our workbench. Since the development of our iconic grip pad, we had already accounted for the case’s thickness within the design of our interchangeable grip system — developing camera cases had been in our agenda since day one. But we didn’t move forward. Because we hadn’t yet found a partner willing to obsess over leather craftsmanship the way we do.

Now, the time has come.

On Leather: We Have Some “Stubborn” Standards.

We’ve bought and tried most of the cases on the market. And honestly? There’s always something that feels just a little bit off.

Take the leather. Good full‑grain calfskin costs real money. Cut the budget, and you end up with corrected‑grain leather or even split leather — thick artificial coatings hiding flaws, a chemical smell when you open the box, and a nagging feeling that it just doesn’t belong on your camera.

So we set one non‑negotiable rule for ourselves: Only European first‑tier tanneries. Only high‑quality full‑grain, top‑layer calfskin.

Haas (France), Alran (France), Weinheimer (Germany), HCP (France) — if you know leather, these names need no introduction. They are the long‑term suppliers to Hermès, Chanel, and the world’s most discerning luxury houses. Centuries of history. Generations of craftsmanship.

Why European tanneries? It’s not about geography — it’s about what happens before the leather even reaches the tannery.

European pastures are temperate, with few insects. The raw hides come in almost flawless — virtually no scars, no bug bites. Slaughtered animals are refrigerated within two hours, preserving the collagen fibres intact. Tanneries hand‑grade every single hide upon arrival. Only A+ grade full‑grain raw hides make the cut. Anything less is rejected outright.

Full‑grain — that is the top tier of top‑grain leather. Almost no sanding. Minimal or zero coating. The natural pores and fibrous structure remain completely intact. Breathable. Supple. It gains character and lustre with age. With normal use, 8 to 15 years of life — it will grow old gracefully alongside your camera.

We don’t use corrected‑grain leather. We don’t hide flaws behind thick coatings. The breathability of real leather shouldn’t be replaced by a plasticky feel.

And calfskin? European standards strictly define it as under 6 months old. The fibres are far finer than cowhide. The pores are tighter. The hand‑feel is almost like baby skin — a level of refinement that cowhide can never achieve.

As for exotic leather — we only use French HCP‑tanned Nile monitor lizard. Round, orderly scales. A diamond‑like shimmer. HCP uses pure aniline dyeing that penetrates deep into the fibres, followed by agate‑stone polishing that leaves the scale edges smooth and gentle to the touch — no sharpness, no irritation. The scales stay firmly bonded to the base leather for life — no lifting, no peeling. In contrast, standard Indonesian lizard leather has smaller, elongated scales and relies on thick artificial coatings to simulate a glossy finish — and over time, that coating cracks and peels.

We refuse to cut corners on leather. Because we know you wouldn’t either.

The Lining: What’s Hidden Inside, but Never Overlooked.

We’ve chosen the finest leather for the outside — but what about the inside? Many don’t care. We do.

We use Italian Lyliane® microfiber — produced by Lorenzi Srl, based in Vigonza, Padua, a leading European company in luxury leather‑goods microfiber. Founded in the 1990s as a leather accessory distributor, Lorenzi launched the Lyliane product line in 2008, now producing over 3 million metres of high‑end microfiber annually. They have a Shanghai branch dedicated to supplying top‑tier leather‑goods manufacturers in China.

Lyliane is the go‑to lining and backing material used by Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Celine, Prada, Bottega Veneta — among other premier luxury brands.

Why do they all choose Lyliane?

First, the formula. Lyliane is a wet‑process microfiber composed of 50% polyamide (nylon) and 50% polyurethane (PU) , engineered to mimic the fibrous structure of genuine leather — not the cheap non‑woven coated fabric you see in budget goods.

Two core product lines:

Lyliane Microbase — the most widely used for backing and stiffening. It is 30% lighter than genuine leather, yet has 60% higher tear strength. It withstands repeated folding without leaving permanent creases. It remains crisp and full‑bodied, stays soft even at low temperatures, and is dimensionally stable — no swelling or shrinking. Available in thicknesses from 0.3 mm to 2.1 mm, in black and white standard colours, with custom dyeing options.

Lyliane Suede — a micro‑suede with a soft, napped surface, ideal for linings. It feels almost like lambskin suede. An environmentally friendly GRS‑certified recycled version (made from recycled PET) is also available.

What does this mean for your camera case?

1. Lightweight. It is 30% lighter than leather linings, which aligns perfectly with our overall weight‑reduction goal — every layer sheds grams so that the final case feels virtually weightless on your camera.

2. Durable. With 60% higher tear strength than leather, it resists permanent creasing and won’t delaminate or bubble over time, even after years of repeated mounting and removal.

3. Stable. It doesn’t stiffen in the cold or swell in humidity. Cheap domestic microfibers often become rigid in winter and warp in damp conditions. Lyliane stays supple and true to size, whether you’re shooting in a dry winter climate or a humid summer.

4. Eco‑friendly and premium. PVC‑free, low DMF, and the latest range is PFC‑free with non‑fluorinated water‑repellent treatment, meeting strict EU luxury environmental standards. It has excellent colourfastness, resists ageing, and won’t become sticky or powdery over the long term. It is breathable yet water‑resistant — unlike coated linings that feel suffocating.

5. Perfect bonding. It adheres seamlessly to all types of genuine leather — Togo, Epsom, ostrich, lizard — without bubbling or separating. This is critical for our multi‑layer construction, ensuring that each layer bonds cleanly to deliver an exceptionally snug fit.

A word of caution: Many domestic imitation products look similar but fall far short in tear strength, low‑temperature flexibility, and branded markings. Genuine Lyliane has a Lyliane® embossed logo on the back, and the correct spelling is Lyliane — not Lylian or Lilyane.

The lining is invisible, but over time, you’ll feel the difference.

Hand‑Stitching: Our Commitment to “Slow.”

Before the sewing machine, all leather goods were hand‑stitched. Then came the machine — 500 times faster, dramatically cheaper. Hand‑stitching became a niche, not because it’s outdated, but because it’s slow and expensive.

We chose hand‑stitching anyway. Specifically, the saddle stitch.

Why?

Machine stitching works by interlocking an upper thread with a lower bobbin thread. No matter how advanced the machine — even a German Dürkopp — it cannot avoid a slight stitch bump — a tiny raised bead at each perforation. And if one stitch breaks, the entire seam unravels.

The saddle stitch is different. Two needles cross‑thread each hole independently. Every stitch is a closed loop. One breaks — the rest hold firm. More importantly: no presser‑foot marks on delicate leather surfaces — crucial for lizard, fine calf, or any leather that shows pressure marks easily.

The cost? Speed. For the same length of stitching, a machine is 500+ times faster. That’s why the vast majority of leather goods on the market are machine‑stitched. Nothing wrong with that — it’s just not how we want to do things.

Every stitch on our hand‑stitched version is done by craftman with over a decade of experience. And we use linen thread — the same used by top‑tier leather goods houses. Not nylon. Not polyester. Linen. It softens and warms in colour over time, ageing beautifully alongside your camera.

(Example of less then perfect hand stitching compare  to ours below)

Since real hand stitching is expensive, for each version of our product we offer two versions:

With fully hand stitching version and without hand stitching version

For without hand stitching version, We skip decorative stitching altogether. Just premium leather, clean and unadorned — letting the material speak for itself.

No chemical coatings. No harsh odours. Just the honest smell of leather.

Without stitching version will have decorative press lines and it helps the production and focusing on the essential quality.

Weight: The Detail We Care About Most.

Another thing we obsessed over: weight.

Many cases on the market make your camera feel “heavy in hand” the moment you mount them. Two reasons: thicker leather (often to hide stitching imperfections), and bulky metal bottom plates.

We took a different approach. Our proprietary structural patent allows the bottom plate to be remarkably thin and light without compromising strength.
Standard version, including the grip, weighs under 60 grams (ultra slim base design).

(e.g. M10 original height at 81mm, with our leather case at 83.5)

Once attached to your camera, you barely notice the added weight. But the moment your fingers curl around it, the secure grip settles perfectly into your palm — confident, stable, natural.

It helps to keep the proportion of the camer as much as possible!

Here is a typical visual height different between us and other brands

The Pursuit of Flawless Fit.

Leica and Hasselblad bodies are icons. We treat them with the respect they deserve.

A multi‑layer leather case, combining materials with different softness and stretch characteristics, can never achieve absolute zero‑tolerance fitment on all sides simultaneously. The laws of physics simply don’t allow it — you can get one side perfectly flush, but the other side will always have some clearance.

We didn’t accept that as an excuse. Through dozens of pattern revisions, adjusting in increments of tenths of a millimetre, and drawing on over a decade of experience in precision leather crafting, we’ve pushed the fitment to its absolute practical limit. Tolerances so tight, they’re barely visible. If fact, if you have applied a protective vinyl on you camera you should remove them.

Once mounted, the case feels like a natural extension of the camera body — visually and tactilely. You hardly notice it’s there.

Protecting what matters. Revealing what’s meant to be seen.

This Is Just the Beginning of a new Chapter

M series, Q series, Hasselblad X/CD series — every model will get its own dedicated camera case.
The lightweight version is our first chapter. More functional variants are on the way — quick‑release mechanisms, different grip profiles, special material combinations — all coming in time.

The IDSworks case collection will grow into a complete system, just like our camera grips.

For Those Who Care About the Details.

If you think “a case is a case” — this might not be for you as quality do cost... yet we also provide without hand stitch version to balance cost and quality.

But if you care about how a case smells when you open the box, whether the stitching is evenly spaced, how the camera feels in your hand after you mount it — if you believe a premium camera deserves a case that’s equally uncompromising —

IDSworks Half‑Cover Cases are now available for pre‑order soon.

First batch quantity is limited — our hand‑stitching team has limited leather goods masters, and they don’t rush. It usually takes 15 days for half case to produce (faster for without hand stitch version)

But we waited two years to bring this to life. We expect you can wait a little? just a little?
